The most important factor to consider when choosing a backpack is the weight and size relative to the size of the child. The top of the backpack should not extend higher than the top of the shoulder, and the bottom should no fall below the top of the hipbone. The shoulder straps of the backpack should be at least two inches wide, adjustable and padded.
The backpack should always include a hip strap or a waist belt, which redistributes the weight of the bag to the pelvis to decrease the load on the neck, upper back and shoulders. Choosing a bag with several compartments also helps to distribute the weight of the bag and decrease strain on the back.

PNF STRETCHING PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching, also known as isometric stretching, is a combination of passive stretching and isometrics in which a muscle is alternatingly stretched passively and contracted. The technique targets nerve receptors in the muscles to extend the muscle length. The therapist will stretch the individual until no further stretching seems possible, the stretch is held for up to 30 seconds. Then, when the muscle gets relaxed again, it should be immediately stretched farther. This technique of alternating stretching and contracting can be repeated several times, in order to stretch a bit further each time.

Trigger points represent small areas of tightness within muscles, creating “knots” or tiny bumps from the contracted muscle fibers. Current literature indicates that nerve impulses to these muscle fibers will not “shut off” and that trigger points require some form of manual intervention to help them release.

Although a true case of carpal tunnel syndrome is attributed compression of the median nerve at the wrist, irritation anywhere along the length of this nerve can lead to symptoms that mimic this syndrome. The median nerve leaves the spinal cord at the lower part of the neck, where it starts out as a series of nerve roots. Vertebral subluxations can cause irritation and/or inflammation of the nerve roots, as they pass very close to the joints and discs of the neck.

Drs. Winchester and Sneyd specialize in treating carpal tunnel. Call 614-760-5555 for and schedule a FREE consult to see how they can help you, or visit our website, www.thewinchesterinstitute.com.
