The most important factor to consider when choosing a backpack is the weight and size relative to the size of the child. The top of the backpack should not extend higher than the top of the shoulder, and the bottom should no fall below the top of the hipbone. The shoulder straps of the backpack should be at least two inches wide, adjustable and padded.
The backpack should always include a hip strap or a waist belt, which redistributes the weight of the bag to the pelvis to decrease the load on the neck, upper back and shoulders. Choosing a bag with several compartments also helps to distribute the weight of the bag and decrease strain on the back.
